Georgia Gwinnett College’s Tmimi Named 2022 CAC Men’s Soccer Player of the Year
Record-breaking Georgia Gwinnett College senior forward Karim Tmimi headlines the 2022 Continental Athletic Conference Men's Soccer all-conference team as the league's Player of the Year. The team and special honors were announced by member head coaches on the eve of this weekend's championship tournament.
Joining Tmimi in earning special awards were Ernesto Ascenzo of Viterbo University (Wisconsin) as Goalkeeper of the Year, Florida National University's Ricardo Delwing and Georgia Gwinnett College's Emanuele Sordi as co-Newcomer of the Year, and GGC's Steve DeCou as Coach of the Year.
Tournament top-seeded Georgia Gwinnett College garnered 11 all-conference selections across the first- and second teams at the forward, midfielders, defenders, and goalkeeper positions. Viterbo had eight honorees while Waldorf University (Iowa) received two awardees and Bellevue University (Nebraska), Florida National University and Iowa Wesleyan each had one selection.
Tmimi led the No. 5-ranked Grizzlies with 17 goals, nine assists and 43 points while scoring a point in all 15 matches this regular season. The senior registered a hat trick against then No. 1-ranked University of Mobile (Alabama) on September 21.
Ascenzo has anchored the V-Hawks' defensive unit by posting a 0.42 goals across 11 of the team's 15 victories. He allowed just five goals and made 36 saves this fall heading into postseason play.
Delwing started all 13 matches for the Conquistadors in 2022 and scored three goals and provided one assist. The defender helped the team twice earn scoreless draws against top-10 ranked St. Thomas University (Florida) and seven shutouts.
Sordi scored seven goals in his first season after transferring from Lincoln College (Illinois). The forward scored game-winning goals against Reinhardt University (Georgia) and Bryan College (Tennessee) in late August.
DeCou led GGC to a 12-1-2 record heading into the championship tournament. The Grizzlies' No. 5 ranking in the final NAIA Top 25 poll of the regular season matches the highest ranking in program history.
